Maybe Sport Can Help Save the World
Team Sports would have to be one of the best concepts in life. When I was growing up I loved any team sport-rugby, hockey, soccer or cricket. I loved it so much that at one stage I could have been forgiven for thinking that it was all that gave us any meaning in life. I even thought that maybe sport could save the world! It just felt like such an honest representation of life in general – a representation of our ego but also a knowingness that it’s more effective to work together to solve any problem no matter how big or how small. Whether playing or just watching, it brings structure and meaning and can be a welcome distraction for these incredibly fast paced times.
With so many problems going on in the world or within oneself, somehow sport really does allow you momentary disassociation. It provides us with some relief from the serious issues that face us both as an individual growing up in this world but also from the serious issues that we face collectively as a species.
With humans becoming more and more preoccupied with just surviving life rather than living it, sport still gives us an incredible sense of camaraderie, hope and relief from the problems of life.
Camaraderie is such a strong comfort for the soul of humans – to be working together for a united goal. I mean we all want to belong, and playing a team sport gives us that sense of belonging. I used to think that the most exciting thing must have been to be part of the Australian rugby side or the Australian cricket team. Training with your mates, working hard together and aiming for the same thing- to beat the other side but with the best part really just being with your mates and working as a team. In an age where we seem to be becoming more and more isolated from each other and within ourselves, sport helps remind us of the deep satisfaction which comes when we are all working together.
Team sport provides a vehicle for hope , something for us to still lose yourself in, barracking for our side together, still sure that the elusive try, wicket or goal isn’t too far away. To still have hope is crucial for our future- it affords the possibility that as a species we are getting somewhere and a belief that we can do it. So having hope shouldn’t be understated as it surely has to show that at least we all know that we need to keep trying to help save the world. It means we are still out there batting, still working on the deeper issues in life but knowing that it is fine to take a breather and just enjoy watching or playing sport with your mates all the while watching a wonderful metaphor for life.
So whilst sport in it’s own right may not be able to save the world don’t ever for one second underestimate it’s importance along the way.

A lot of people say that hard jobs or physical labor. But I think that one of the hardest jobs in the world is being a writer. Especially being a writer for TV or movies. That is because there is so much competition and so few people are actually genuinely successful at it. I do not even know how to write a screenplay but my cousin is trying to do it in California and I think that she is very good but still having a hard time of it. I think maybe it is getting a little bit easier because it is much more affordable for people to just make their own movies. But I still think that is a much harder job. Even know it is not physically taxing it must be mentally taxing to face so much rejection. I guess in that sense being an actor is also one of the hardest jobs.
